Charleston Event Photography: Charleston Stage Director's Circle for Nevermore!

October is, obviously, the season for all things spooky, and what better time for Charleston Stage to highlight the mysterious death of Edgar Allen Poe? When I realized that the Charleston Stage company was performing “Nevermore! Voyage into the Netherworld”, I was really excited to photograph their Director’s Circle reception for opening night at Charleston’s stunning Dock Street Theatre. Though I received my BFA in Photography, my second major was in English Literature and Poe has long been one of my favorite writers… and anyone who knows me will tell you that Halloween is absolutely my favorite holiday. I have a 6 foot long motorized inflatable black cat in my front yard right now to prove it!

“Nevermore! Voyage into the Netherworld” was written and directed by Julian Wiles, who is also the founder of Charleston Stage. The play artfully incorporates scenes from Edgar Allen Poe’s most popular writings into the action of the story, which speculates on what might have happened on Edgar Allen Poe’s dreadful and infamous steamer voyage before his tragic death in Baltimore in 1847.

Edgar Allen Poe boarded a steamer in Baltimore for an overnight trip to New York City, but apparently he never arrived in New York. Rather, the famed writer was found five days later wandering the streets of Baltimore in a raving delirium. He was taken to a tavern and mysteriously passed away shortly thereafter.

Featured Poe stories in “Nevermore!” include The Cask of Amontillado, The Telltale Heart, The Gold Bug, The Raven, and The Masque of the Red Death

Charleston Stage will be running “Nevermore! Voyage into the Netherworld” from now until November 3, 2019 and tickets are available here. If you’re interested in supporting Charleston Stage, consider joining the Director’s Circle here.

The show is deliciously dark and fabulous and will definitely get you in the holiday spirit before Halloween!
